More “wtf are humans, please leave the rest of us be” stuff:

Human reactions to fear!

No, I’m not talking about screaming or freezing in one spot and pissing yourself. I’m talking about the weirder, more specific-to-only-humans fear reactions.

Like singing.

Idk how many of you have watched people play horror video games, but a surprising amount of people start narrating what’s going on in a sing-song voice.

Imagine being an alien, walking in a horrific, dark tunnel with these weird gangly creatures, you’re all scared out of your wits and then one of them starts fucking singing.

In a dark cave. While everyone’s terrified.

“ ♫ ~We are all gonna fucking die, this is terrible and I wanna go hooooome~ ♬ ”

No one asked but this is because the vibrations stimulate the vagus nerve (which is closely associated with anxiety) and reduce stress & pain signals ! Also often times stress songs we sing are slow which helps regulate breathing and heart rate in you & your group. Singing and humming especially at certain pitches can even help with physical pain.

Also its a way to get out those scared/stressed feelings without panicking or crying (which would like be pretty bad in any scary situation) and most people have more positive associations with singing (when its not related to performance anxiety) so its comforting in that way as well.

So as hilarious as it is it actually makes loads of sense from an evolutionary perspective but then that also bares the question: did cavemen sing while being attacked by wild beasts? Is this why cats purr? Are cat purrs narrating surrounding activity? Why has no one taken away my phone its 5 am?

What I got from this post is that human singing is the equivalent of a cat purr.

Studio Ghibli Color Designer Michiyo Yasuda, has passed away. :’(

Michiyo Yasuda, long time animator & color designer of Studio Ghibli passed away

Japan’s Mainichi has reported on the death of long time color designer and the chief of the ink and paint division of Studio Ghibli Michiyo Yasuda, who passed away of an undisclosed illness on October 5 at the age of 77. Yasuda started working at Toei Dogo before she was 20 and joined Studio Ghibli co-founders Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki on the 1968 anime feature Horus, Prince of the Sun aka the Little Norse Prince.

Yasuda later worked on Miyazaki’s ‘78 TV anime Future Boy Conan, pre-Ghibli feature Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Studio Ghibli’s features such as Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro,  Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo, as well as Isao Takahata works like Grave of the Fireflies

While Yasuda officially retried after Studio Ghibli released Ponyo in 2008, she came back in 2013 for Miyazaki's “final feature” The Wind Rises. Yasuda won an Animation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 from the Japan Movie Critics Awards.

Her career spanned over five decades, beginning as a tracer for animation before shifting into color work. She was present at the inception of Studio Ghibli, and continued to run the Color Department until her retirement following PONYO in 2008. Then returned to work for The Wind Rises.

i hate that we live in a world where mentally ill people feel obligated to apologize for relapsing/being suicidal/having breakdowns/hitting rock bottom like….there’s nothing worse than being in that position and feeling like you’re just letting everybody around you down. that makes my heart ache so much
